They've already given us not one but two Big Fat Greek Weddings - but it will never be enough! After it was reported in April 2021 that a third installment of the 2002 comedy, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, was on the way, fans have been anxiously waiting for updates. Finally, its main star Nia Vardalos has taken to Instagram to deliver some good news - and let's just say it was worth the wait!
In a video clip filmed in her hotel room, Vardalos, who played Toula Portokalos in the original film, announced that production of the third movie had officially begun. "We are in Greece filming My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3!" she excitedly told her followers. "Thank you so much for the lovely messages of just waiting. We're filming in the beautiful Plaka of Athens!" The actress then revealed the biggest news of all. Not only will she reprise her iconic character, but she will also be taking on the role of director!
The 2002 classic romantic comedy follows Toula, a young woman of Greek descent being pressured by her traditionally Greek parents to find a husband and start a family. When she falls in love with an American man named Ian, it's not quite what her parents had in mind as they struggle to come to terms with the fact that he is not Greek like them. Once again, the third film will follow the lead-up to a Greek couple's wedding. However, in a full-circle moment, this time, the bride will be Toula and Ian's daughter, Paris.
