The queen of the rom-com genre is officially back in action. The first trailer for Meg Ryan’s film, What Happens Later, was released. Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming film.
Not only is the rom-com champion Meg Ryan returning to the genre that made her a household name, but she is also the one behind the camera and the script. Talk about a triple threat! Ryan directed What Happens Later, based on a play called Shooting Star by Steven Dietz. Dietz wrote the screenplay along with Ryan and playwright Kirk Lynn. The story follows former lovers who are reunited unexpectedly when a snowstorm leaves them stranded at the airport. Californication alum David Duchovny stars opposite Ryan. With both of their flights not going anywhere, they are stuck catching up on the two decades since their breakup.
Ryan spoke with Entertainment Weekly about her upcoming feature and said, “These rom-coms really work when the two characters are somehow opposites and yet have a rhythm of intellect and humor and dialogue and banter that sort of indicates their compatibility.” She continued to speak about her co-star, saying “So, it’s just been really fun to see David embrace this guy who I don’t think is anything really like David… To see him dive into every single scene in the fullest way, he’s funny, and he’s smart, and he’s dear, and irresistible.” In classic rom-com fashion, when the two exes are stuck in the terminal overnight, they start to unravel their past, their relationship, and the path their lives separately took over these past decades. Ryan is known for her iconic roles in films such as Sleepless in Seattle, You’ve Got Mail, and When Harry Met Sally, but it’s been years since the actress has taken her place as a leading lady.

Duchovny told People at the Tribeca Film Festival, “It’s really good. What Happens Later, and it’s really a good movie. I mean, it’s just me and her, the whole damn movie, and it’s just a kind of throwback sweet film.” What Happens Later will be released in theaters on October 13. Stay tuned for more details!
