BBC's hit series Ghosts is shutting the coffin lid and saying goodbye to our beloved, barely-alive friends. The news comes after the completion of shooting for their fifth and final season. Created by the team behind everyone's favorite history show, Horrible Histories, the gang (comprised of Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe-Douglas, Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard, and Ben Willbond) first aired the show in 2019.
"After five incredible years haunting the halls of Button House, we have decided that the time is right to let our beloved sitcom rest in peace. We have just wrapped filming on our fifth and final series, and we can't wait to share it with you all later this year," the gang revealed via the show's social media pages. The team created the show, Ghosts, which naturally appeals to families and has a historical bent. However, what makes it unique is how much the team adored making this show with their old coworkers, and that love certainly shows on-screen.
Mathew Baynton, particularly memorable for his stints as William Shakespeare and Charles II in Horrible Histories, spoke to the BBC about how the show came about. "Initially, we just wanted to do something together. We knew Horrible Histories was finishing, and we wanted to come up with another thing to do together, so we hired a room and threw some ideas around. I think the Haunted House thing was one of the first." Mathew now plays Thomas, a hopeless romantic poet that lost his life in a duel for love. Having set his sights on the new inhabitant of the house, Alison must keep the lovestruck poet at bay, with the help of her husband Mike.

For just one storyline in many clever backstories that make us adore the characters, Ghosts has always been at the top of its game. Each character represents a different period when they passed in. From a stone age caveman to a scandalous politician, every wandering house member is chained to barely-living there. In the upcoming final series, Alison and Mike will explore new ways to make money and consider a new chapter that could significantly impact the ghosts' afterlife. In the first episode, we watched as the house of spirits desperately tried to pass into the next world so they could abandon the old mansion. Finally, we are hoping to see the historical family amalgamation move on to the afterlife.
