A new comedy series is coming to Starz, and we've got a feeling you're in for a real treat! The executive producer behind Dear White People and A Leading Man, Steven J. Kung, is bringing us Plan A, a comedy focused on the Asian American experience. In addition to Kung helming the project, the producer will link up with an old-time friend, Justin Simien, who executively produced Dear White People alongside him. Here's what to expect.
Kung has put years and years into creating female-forward, POC, and queer stories through his art, most famously with A Leading Man, a film highlighting the anti-Asian racism in the entertainment industry. "I've always wanted to watch a show about people who look like me, just walking around, living their lives, and taking up space," Kung, who is of Taiwanese heritage, shared. "Starz and Lionsgate have given us an enormous amount of freedom to create Plan A, and it's allowed me and my extraordinary creative partners Justin Simien and Leann Bowen to take the story to an authentic, edgy, and joyous place." His co-producer, Simien, added, "From the moment Steven pitched me the project, I was dazzled. I'm so thrilled to be back with Steven and Leann to continue the playful yet bold storytelling we poured our hearts into refining during the writing of the TV series Dear White People."
Plan A will document the story of Asian Americans living in Los Angeles who are working towards the all-American Dream, while searching to answer what does the American Dream really mean? Achieving a high-status job and finding trustworthy and loving relationships is just the start. The most challenging part is navigating the cultural difference and high expectations of their families, society as a whole, and in the end -themselves.
