Celeste Barber is making money moves. And lucky for us, her career is all about making people laugh, so more moolah in the bank for her means more LOL-worthy moments for us. Here's everything we know about the comedian's latest deal with - drum roll, please - Netflix.
Celeste is one of those unique gems who somehow managed to become small-screen popular and Instagram famous for two completely different reasons. She starred in The Letdown from 2016 to 2019. On the Gram, Barber continually breaks the internet with her viral trend, #celestechallengeaccepted, where she creates side-by-side images of Instagram-perfect celebs versus her attempt at copying them. And all of that success on the small screens just landed her another hilarious gig.
The Australian actress is set to star and executive produce Netflix's latest drama-comedy, Wellmania. The streaming site has ordered eight episodes for the new series based on Brigid Delaney's novel Wellmania: Misadventures in the Search for Wellness. Celeste nagged the protagonist's role: Liv, a woman living a reckless lifestyle who decides to embark on a wellness journey after encountering a significant health crisis. TBH, sounds relatable.
But, of course, she won't get it right the first time. That wouldn't be very funny, would it? Viewers will watch Liv try everything from get-well-quick scams to unexpected treatments just to get back to her old self. "I'm so excited about this project, the whole team is awesome," Celeste gushed after news broke of her latest role.
"We've been working on it for a while, and I've been busting to tell everyone about it," she continued. "I'm drawn to projects that center around interesting, dynamic, and complex lead female characters, and that's exactly what Wellmania is. I'm stoked to be working with Netflix and tell this Australian story to an international audience, and to also be an executive producer so I can boss people around." That's our gal.
And according to Netflix's Director of Content in Australia and New Zealand, Barber is perfect for the part. "Celeste embodies exactly what Netflix ANZ is striving for - speaking global love for being our quintessentially Australian and funny selves," Que Minh Luu said. "To have an artist with Celeste's warmth and comedic talent guide us through the extremes, triumphs, and revelations of self-improvement and understanding is an absolutely delight, and one we know our members will love."
