It's a bird; it's a plane; it's a... colossal potato. We're not kidding - this might be the biggest starchy vegetable you've ever laid eyes on. Keep scrolling for all of the hilarious details on the random (and humongous) potato one New Zealand couple found in their backyard.
Donna and Colin Craig-Brown were hard at work in their garden when they came across something unexpected. "I got the fork and jabbed into it and pointed it to the ground and holy snap and turtle teeth, what's goin' on here? What is it?" Colin shared of that fateful day. "I said to Don, 'It's a potato!' And she went, 'No!' I said, 'Yeah, it is!'" In the end, Colin was right.
"It's fair to say our veggie garden can sometimes get a bit feral. There are some parts of the garden you need to pack a lunch and advise your next of kin before heading in to," Colin teased. But even with a wild one of a backyard, the couple still didn't understand how a ginormous potato managed to grow amongst their cucumbers, of all places. "It's a mystery to me," Colin said. "It's one of nature's little pleasant surprises."
"We couldn't believe it," Donna recalled. "It was just huge." The potato, which the couple lovingly named Doug, weighed over 17 pounds. The Craig-Brown gang is waiting to hear back from the Guinness World Record if their exciting find is the largest of its kind. "If we have it confirmed, there will be a celebration," Donna assured.
But pretty much every day in Doug's life has been a celebration since they discovered the large - and quite ugly - potato. "We put a hat on him. We put him on Facebook, taking him for a walk, giving him some sunshine," Colin said. "It's all a bit of fun. It's amazing what entertains people."
Sadly, all that fun in the sun had its downside. "He was getting a bit pongy," Colin detailed. So the New Zealanders resolved to keep their potato pal in the freezer for safekeeping. But that doesn't mean its time in the limelight is over: once they hear back from the Guinness World Record, Colin is thinking about turning Doug into a delicious vodka. "I'm thinking since I'm a bit of a hobbyist homebrewer, I'm thinking about a special vodka," he said. Well, the least he could do is hold a memorial service in Doug's honor when that moment arrives.
