During its seven hilarious seasons on Fox, New Girl left us in tears at the end of every episode. Sometimes it was from laughter, but sometimes it was from seeing Nick and Jess break up mid-series. After all, most fans wanted to see these two together! And according to Zooey Deschanel, even she knew how much chemistry she had with her former co-star.
The 500 Days of Summer star spilled the behind-the-scene secret from her former sitcom during an episode of her new podcast, Welcome to Our Show. On it, Zooey, Lamorne Morris, and Hannah Simone go through old New Girl episodes and offer some backstage access into what was going down behind the scenes. This week's episode brought some particular news our way, pertaining to the relationship Zooey and Jake Johnson (who played Nick Miller) had on-screen. Even the writers of the show picked up on it! "[The writers] were like, 'Listen, you guys have such great chemistry," Deschanel dished in the podcast episode. "We have to play this out over time, and we don't want to put you guys in the same storylines together."
While Zooey and Jake were open about their deep connection and friendship from the get-go, it had previously just been rumored that the writers had to keep these fictional soulmates at bay. "I was like, 'Isn't that a good thing?'" Deschanel asked jokingly to her podcast co-stars. "I think we all had good chemistry together from the get-go, in different ways." But when it came to Nick and Jess, it was simply romantic sitcom gold. "They did say they wanted to play out that storyline, that our chemistry was really good," the now-42-year-old actress continued to explain. And they certainly took their time! For diehard New Girl fans will remember we were waiting on that first Nick and Jess kiss all the way until the second season.
