While it's been quite a few years since the cast of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air released a new episode, Will Smith announced that the series is making a comeback, and it's going to be an unbelievable production! Smith's inspiration for the reboot actually came from a loyal fan, who produced a four-minute trailer, transforming the show into a contemporary drama.
Morgan Cooper, the Fresh Prince 'superfan' who created the viral trailer, caught Smith's attention after posting it to YouTube. Will was determined to track down Cooper to talk more about his creation in an interview for his popular YouTube channel.
"I saw the trailer that Morgan Cooper hooked up, and it's called Bel-Air," said Smith. "This was the first time that I heard something and was like 'Yo, that's an idea that is brilliant.'" Smith and Cooper teamed up to bring the idea to life, and have been working hard to produce it for over a year.
The reboot, titled Bel-Air, will feature a brand new cast with a dramatic take on the old-school series. The storyline "will dive deeper into the inherent conflicts, emotions, and biases of what it means to be a black man in America today," according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The original show, which aired in the 90s, was produced by the iconic musician, Quincy Jones. He's supposedly planning to return with the reboot and watch his vision from the 90s live on, alongside Smith. "We get to go back to the beginning and start talking about my real experiences," Smith said, regarding the upcoming drama.
"What's exciting to me is the new media of it all, that you put something on YouTube," Will told Morgan Cooper. "You just made a trailer, created something. I'm excited and inspired about the new way that human beings are interacting and ideas are getting treated."
