Sammi Cohen Defends Casting Adam Sandler's Daughters in New Comedy
| LAST UPDATE 09/07/2023
Adam Sandler's latest movie, You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah, has become an instant hit. The coming-of-age film also stars Sandler's daughters, and some people are questioning this decision. Keep reading to see what the director has to say!
The movie, which is based on the 2005 book written by Fiona Rosenbloom, centers around besties Stacy and Lydia, who are planning their bat mitzvahs at the same time. For those unfamiliar with the term, a bat mitzvah is a ceremony in the Jewish religion that marks a girl's passage into womanhood, whereas "bar mitzvah" is the term used for boys. However, things go awry for Stacy and Lydia when Lydia kisses Stacy's crush. Sunny Sandler, Adam's younger daughter, stars as Stacy, while her older sister, Sadie, stars as her movie sister, Ronnie. Their parents, Adam and Jackie, also have roles in the film. Adam portrays Stacy's father, and Idina Menzel stars as his onscreen wife. Meanwhile, Jackie plays the role of Lydia's mom. However, many are calling out that Sandler's girls are "nepo babies" and debating this decision to have them in the movie.
The film's director, Sammi Cohen, told The Hollywood Reporter, "Sandler has a reputation for making movies with his friends, and that's something we all want to do. What I say is, he's still making movies with his friends, but they're his kids. He is the kind of dad who's also your best friend." The Sandler daughters were already attached to the movie when Cohen signed on as its director. She also praises the girls and their work ethic. She continued, "But one thing that just sticks out – they work harder than most adults I know. They love acting and filmmaking in general. They take such an interest in how the movie is made, and they're both so talented." Let's give these girls a standing ovation! It seems like they deserve it. Plus, they've become the talk of Tinseltown. It has become the number-one movie on Netflix since it dropped on the streaming platform.
