Ever since Eddie Murphy confirmed that the sequel to Coming to America will be released on March 5th, fans have been eager to find out the details. On the latest episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live, costars Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall gave us a deeper look into their friendship and discussed Coming 2 America, including how they tricked viewers over the years.
Murphy told Kimmel that Oprah Winfrey revealed that she'd never realized Murphy and Hall each played several characters in the film, in addition to their lead roles. "A lot of people don't know that's us in those makeups," Eddie explained. "Last week, I was doing the other interview with Oprah and… I said something about the barbershop [scenes] - and I'm that Jewish man - and she was like, 'What do you mean, you're the Jewish man?"
"I said, 'Oh yeah, I'm the old Jewish guy in the barbershop,' [and] she was like, 'What?'" Murphy continued. "She couldn't believe it. And she's seen the original Coming to America and [it's sequel] and all this time didn't know." Evidently, even loyal fans of the film could not detect Murphy's face under all of the makeup; Did you notice it was him in the barbershop scene?
"Those makeups are amazing," said Eddie. "Originally, they were designed by Rick Baker - the genius - and those makeups… it's like, I can go talk to you, and you won't know that it's a makeup. It's amazing." Kimmel then asked both actors if they've ever taken advantage of these incredible disguises and "approached strangers." Hall revealed that "Eddie hit on an old lady once."
"Rick Baker let us walk around, he said, 'Just try it out, move your face, you'll see how it works,'" Arsenio explained. "And we went out... and then [Eddie] got an old lady's phone number. She thought he was a real old dude." So, next time you watch Coming to America, take a closer look at the characters, and maybe you'll spot the men behind the makeup, as well as in the trailer for Coming 2 America, which was released back in December of 2020.
