At long last, stand-up comedians are getting recognition at the annual Golden Globes awards ceremony. The Golden Globes recently announced the addition of two new categories, one of which will recognize the best performance in stand-up comedy on television. Many comedians weighed in on the exciting news, and their reactions did not disappoint!
“I’m thrilled about the Golden Globes acknowledging the outstanding contributions of my fellow comedians in the world of stand-up comedy,” Jo Koy, stand-up comedian and star of Easter Sunday, said earnestly in reaction to the news. He continued, “I have a deep passion for this beautiful art form, and it brings me immense joy to see them shine a spotlight on the exceptional work done by my colleagues in the industry.” While Koy’s response was heart-warming, Gabriel Iglesias, known for his Hawaiian shirts and his “Fluffy” alter ego, reacted to the news in classic comedian fashion – with a joke. The Mr. Iglesias actor referenced Brit Ricky Gervais, who is one of the more notorious comedians to have taken on the gig of hosting the Golden Globes ceremony multiple times. Iglesias said, “This new comedy award should be called the Ricky Gervais.” Major LOLs.
Comedian and podcaster Bert Kreischer had this hilarious reaction, “nice to know that for at least one meal a year, stand-up comedy is finally invited to sit at the adult table. We belong at the kid’s table, but it’s nice to know we can sit with the grown-ups and they’ll let us drink.” The comedians have officially been invited to the grown-ups table. The new category will be in effect for the upcoming 81st annual Golden Globe Awards on Sunday, January 7, 2024. The nominees will include six individuals or a breakout member of a troupe or ensemble. However, only one can claim the throne as the winner for best performance in stand-up comedy on television. The second new category being added to the awards ceremony is the Golden Globe for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. This award will honor hit movies that have become global and box office hits.
