For years, the world has loved the Addams Family. Since their conception in 1938 as part of a comic strip, the satirical all-American family has been the focus of numerous films, television shows, and animations. The eccentric family, whose bizarre behaviors and freakish powers frighten everyone around them, represent American pop culture at its best. Giving the franchise a 2022 makeover, Netflix has announced its new upcoming horror-comedy series, Wednesday Addams, focusing on one family member in particular! Here's what we know so far.
Directed by Tim Burton, the show will follow the life of the only Addams daughter, Wednesday, as she navigates being a teenager at the Nevermore Academy. The moody and gothic family member has always been a fan-favorite, making her mark with her iconic and sarcastic one-liners. On top of the regular social and emotional adolescent challenges, Wednesday will have her hands full, learning to manage her psychic powers, solving historical murder mysteries, and stopping a local killer in its tracks.
Jenna Ortega will be taking on the role of Wednesday; Her resume includes appearances on Netflix's You, The Babysitter: Killer Queen, Yes Day, and Insidious: Chapter 2. "Wednesday is currently a teenager, and we've never seen her as a teenager before," the actress teased of her character in a statement. "Her snarky, snide remarks might not necessarily sound as charming when they're coming from somebody who should probably know better than a 10-year-old girl. There's an opportunity to give her a bit more dimension, and she becomes a bit more of a real person, which I don't think we've ever seen before."
