A Look Into Sofia Richie and Elliot Grainge’s Relationship
| LAST UPDATE 05/01/2023
From Justin Bieber to Scott Disick, Sofia Richie has had some pretty high-profile relationships. But she knew Elliot Grainge would be the one! Let's take a closer look at the newlyweds' relationship over the years.
Born to one of the most famous singers of all time, Lionel Richie, Sofia Richie was destined for success from a young age. However, the 24-year-old model has made a name for herself all on her own.
From her love life to her modeling campaigns, her iconic fashion decisions, and more, Sofia Richie became one of Hollywood's "it girls" at a very young age. So, let's take a closer look at this it girl and her recent nuptials with her husband, Elliot Grainge.
Born in Los Angeles to parents Lionel Richie and Diane Alexander, Richie grew up in the spotlight. She is the youngest sister to Miles and Nicole Richie, which makes her brother-in-law, Good Charlotte, front-man Joel Madden. Oh, and let's not forget her godfather was Michael Jackson.
How's that for a star-studded family? Lionel Richie and her mother, Diane Alexander, got divorced when she was just five years old. Nicole and Sofia may have a 17-year age gap, but the sisters are reported as being really close and have been instrumental parts of each other's lives.
Richie has music in her blood! Growing up, she learned to play the piano at age seven and took vocal lessons, and began singing at a young age. She even worked alongside her brother-in-law, Joel Madden, in the studio but felt like she needed to distance herself from the music world.
Growing up with Grammy winning megastar Lionel Richie as her father, Sofia worried about the pressure she would face if she decided to pursue a career in music, so she turned to modeling. At 14, she appeared in Teen Vogue, and since then has walked the runway for some of the hottest designers out there, from Chanel to Jeremy Scott.
The "It Girl"
Since then, she's graced the cover of Cosmpotalian, Mexico's InStyle, Vogue Japan, Complex, and so much more. Richie then took her talents to the other side of the business and started teaming up with various designers, from Frankie's Bikinis to Rolla Jeans, to create her own collections.
Following in her sister's footsteps, the young fashion designer joined Nicole to release a 57-piece collection for her lifestyle brand, House of Harlow 1969, calling it Sofia Richie x House of Harlow 1960. Sofia Richie was the name everyone was talking about, so it only made sense that she would date some of Hollywood's finest bachelors.
In 2016, when Richie was just a teen, she had a brief fling with the ultimate teen heartbreaker himself, Justin Bieber. Though their relationship didn't last very long, the duo often posted pictures of each other on their social media, including their romantic getaways to Japan and Mexico.
During her relationship with the Sorry singer, Richie talked to Billboard about her "special relationship," saying, "Justin is very easy to talk to, and that's hard to find with people in Los Angeles." We hear you, girl. However, by the end of the year, they had broken up, and Richie was dating Brooklyn Beckham.
Following her relationship with Beckham, Richie began dating Scott Disick. Their 15-year age gap was immediately questioned by the public, considering she was 19 and he was 34 at the time. However, the two dated for over three years.
It took some time for the families to warm up to their relationship. “It’s so weird,” a source told Us Weekly at the time. “Not just the age difference, but mostly the fact that Sofia had been a family friend for years and was close to Kendall and Kylie [Jenner].”
However, a source told Us that "there's no beef" between Sofia and the Kardashian-Jenner clan, and they eventually supported the relationship. However, by 2020, the couple had broken up. "Friends attributed their 15-year age difference becoming an issue," an insider claimed.
"[Scott's] in a very much different place in his life, really focused on a more quiet lifestyle, his kids and his investment businesses and Sofia … is really still trying to figure what she wants to do, which drove them apart over time," according to the insider. So by the summer of 2020, they were over.
One Last Fling
However, "Sofia really pushed to make things work between them after they initially broke up, but Scott officially called it off recently, and they are no longer speaking," a source revealed at the time of their breakup. But this wasn't going to stop her from moving forward!
A few months after her breakup with Disick, rumors had it that the young model had begun dating Cha Cha Matcha cofounder Matthew Morton. "They both run in the same circle and have known each other. So, it's easy and fun for both of them. Sofia's family approves of him, which is super nice for her." But things didn't last too long.
Insert Elliot Grainge
Following her short fling with Matthew Morton, Richie began dating Elliot Grainge! It was March 2021, and Sofia shared a photo of her and her new beau in an elevator wearing masks, and people immediately began wondering who exactly is Elliot Grainge.
Six years older than Richie, Elliot is the son of Universal Music Group chairman and CEO Lucian Grainge. He grew up in the U.K., went to college in Boston, and eventually moved to Los Angeles, where he started 10K Projects record label, where he represents Trippie Redd and Tekashi 6ix9ine. He was even listed on Forbes' 30 under 30 in 2020.
They Go Way Back
So how exactly did he and Richie meet in the first place? Well, Lucian Grainge and Lionel Richie worked with each other, so Elliot and Sofia actually go way back! The two initially bonded over their shared experience growing up in the music industry.
"They have been friends for years, and Elliot is also close with Sofia's brother, Miles," a source told Entertainment Tonight. "It's very nice for Sofia to date someone her family approves of and likes." Yes, it is! And according to Grainge, he likes to "keep the profile as low as possible."
So it really did seem like a match made in music industry heaven! When the duo became Instagram official in April 2021, fans immediately dropped a whole lotta heart emojis and love for the new couple! They were quickly spotted globe-trotting, out to dinners, and just enjoying being with each other.
An insider told Us Weekly that Richie loves that her boo is "low-key and isn't someone who craves the spotlight," which is evident by his private Instagram account! They added, "Elliot is adorable and really funny," and "He always has everyone laughing."
After a few months of dating, the couple moved in with each other! When you know, you know, right? At first, the couple was living in a gorgeous $17 million dollar home in Beverly Hills, and then by the Summer of 2022, the couple purchased a $26.9 million dollar home in Brentwood Park, known as one of L.A.'s most expensive neighborhoods.
And well, it looks beautiful! Elliot recently sat down with Los Angeles Times to talk about his relationship with Sofia and their new home, explaining that his "happy place is with my girl on the couch binging a TV series where we argue about which episode we're on." Celebs, they're just like us!
After just a few months of dating, the couple began celebrating major occasions with one another! In November 2021, Richie shared an adorable birthday tribute celebrating her soon-to-be hubby's 28th birthday. "You are everything to me, I love you, happy birthday babe," she wrote.
They even went to see Sofia's dad perform live at one of his concerts in Vegas! The influencer uploaded a series of photos and videos of her dad performing, along with an adorable photo of them with the whole family. "A day in Vegas!" Richie captioned the post.
After a year of dating, the couple got engaged! In April 2022, Sofia took to her Instagram to share the exciting news with her 8.5 million followers. She shared a shot of the romantic Hawaiian proposal and a close-up of her ring and them locking lips in celebration! "Forever isn't long enough @elliot," she wrote.
During the engagement, a source told Us Weekly, "Sofia is over the moon about her engagement. She couldn't be happier that she found The One." The source added, "She's taking the time to enjoy being engaged and traveling the world with Elliot."
The Perfect Match
Following the exciting news, friends of the couple shared with People that Sofia and Elliot a little were "a great match" for each other. "They make each other really happy," and "he's very mature and hard-working," the source added. Sounds like they are the perfect fit!
The same source told People that all of Sofia's friends are "thrilled that she found true love" and are big fans of their relationship! Following the proposal, fans immediately started wondering when and where the wedding would be, and of course, who would design her dress.
Dad’s Stamp of Approval
Before proposing to Sofia, Elliot asked permission from her father, Lionel, and according to the music legend, his future son-in-law was a "nervous wreck." He jokingly shared with Access Hollywood, "I thought he was to pass out, but he survived it." We can't even imagine!
"I was going to rib him a little bit, but I didn't want to play; he was going to faint," he added. "It was wonderful. … They're deeply in love, so all I can say is, that's what you really want as a dad." Not to mention, Lionel has known Elliot since he was 12 years old!
Family’s on Board
As far as the rest of the fam? They "couldn't be happier for her and Elliot!" A source told Us that her brother "Miles is so proud of his little sister, and Nicole is so sweet, giving her advice on marriage" and being so supportive of the whole relationship. "They are thrilled to welcome Elliot into their family," the source added.
"They've seen her in past relationships, but nothing compares to how happy she seems with Elliot," the source told Us following their engagement. "They know she's going to make an exquisite bride, and they can't wait for her to start this next chapter of her life."
A month after the couple's engagement, Sofia and Elliot hosted an intimate engagement party with close friends and family, including older sis Nicole and brother-in-law Joel Madden. The Nudestix beauty director shared a series of photos showing off the details of the event.
Looking gorgeous as always, Sofia wore a floor-length Bernadette floral dress with white Valentino platforms, while her future hubby sported a tan linen suit. "Obsessed w you @ellliot," she captioned the photos, which included the table arrangement, two-tier cake, and personalized cocktail menu, which included "The Elliot" and "The Sofia."
A Parisian Bachelorette
Ahead of marrying the music exec, Sofia Richie celebrated her last few months of freedom with an iconic bachelorette party in Paris. The 24-year-old flew to Paris with her sister, Nicole, and some of her besties for a week to have the ultimate girls' trip.
Sofia gave her followers some fabulous behind-the-scenes footage of the celebrations while she was there. We saw the gorgeous decked-out bachelorette hotel room with pink and silver balloons, tons of bride-to-be gear, endless amounts of macaroons, and of course, many Eiffel Tower photoshoots.
The Bridal Shower
As the wedding date approaches, Elliot and Sofia continue to celebrate their love with friends and families with more and more pre-wedding, festivities-including a bridal shower! Richie's godmother, Shelleyln Brandler, hosted a dreamy bridal shower for the bride-to-be.
The 24-year-old model wore a white knit halter dress with an open back and plunging neckline, while Elliot wore a grey zip-up and navy vest. The pastel-colored party included tons of food, gorgeous flower arrangements, and a pink cake that read "Sofia & Elliot."
Converted to Judaism
With the wedding just a few weeks away, the young fashion designer announced on her Instagram that she had converted to Judaism. Her fiance, Elliot Grainge, is Jewish, and now so is Richie! Is this giving us Charlotte York vibes, or what? IYKYK
Richie took to her Instagram to share the exciting news. "What a magical day. I want to thank cantor Nathan Lam for helping me along this journey of converting to Judaism," she wrote. "It has been one of the greatest experiences of my life. Today was that day!!!"
Chanel, Chanel and More Chanel
After all the pre-wedding festivities had finally come to a close and the wedding weekend had finally arrived, the question on everyone's mind was: who was designing her wedding dress? And to no one's surprise, the answer was Chanel. Luckily for us, Richie gave Vogue Magazine full access to her custom Chanel looks.
During her Vogue Magazine tell-all, Richie took us along for the ride of her final fitting in Paris at the Chanel haute couture salon. Accompanied by her mother-in-law Lady Caroline Grainge and her best friend Ali Meller, the young bride showed off her rehearsal dinner dress, her gorgeous lace wedding gown, and the after-party look.
The magazine followed Richie for her final fitting as she tried on three perfect dresses for the occasion. To start, a high-necked, long-sleeved beaded floor-length dress for the rehearsal dinner, followed by a magnificent and elegant lace halter wedding dress. And to end, a structured mini dress with a flower embellished on the front.
"This is like a fairy tale," she said. "It really is. It's like an art piece. I feel like a princess, I really do!" As far as what she thinks Elliot will think of her wedding dress? "Honestly think Elliot is going to love it. He is my biggest cheerleader when it comes to anything I wear. If he doesn't cry, I'll be very sad."
The model worked with Chanel creative director Virginie Viard to make her dream looks come to life. She told the outlet that she always had this dream to have a "big princess dress," but getting older, she realized she actually wanted "something a bit more simple."
But then again, "Simple isn't the right word because my dress definitely is not simple," she said. The bride included an inscription of 'S&E' on the inside for her 'something blue' element and two heart embellishments to represent her love for Elliot.
Off to France!
After her custom Chanel dresses were all ready to go, it was time to get married! With their bags packed, Sofia and Elliot headed off to the South of France in preparation for the big weekend. "Here we go," she posted with bridge and groom emojis beside a photo of the two of them.
"I am so excited. [It's] because I'm marrying Elliot, I know that sounds cheesy—but he is the man of my dreams," the model told Vogue. With all her Chanel ready to go, Sofia and Elliot were off to celebrate their love with their closest family and friends.
Once the couple touched down in Antibes for the wedding weekend, Sofia surprised us all with the ultimate wedding gift. She opened up her first TikTok account! The 24-year-old currently has 497 thousand followers, with six videos, five of which are GRWM.
The influencer opened up her social media account, giving fans a behind-the-scenes look into her wedding weekend, specifically getting ready for all the major events. From doing her makeup to getting dressed for her welcome party, Richie is giving fans everything and more with her decision to join the app.
With one quick glance at her Instagram, it's easy to tell her brand of choice is Chanel, so it's no surprise her wedding weekend outfits would be mostly Chanel. From the more laid-back looks to the dinner-time outfits, Sofia's aesthetic was timeless and elegant- with a lot of Chanel handbags.
A standout number from the weekend was the long sleeve sheer "something blue" dress with matching Manolo Blahnik kitten heels. But of course, there needs to be some Chanel. For a pool day hang, the model wore a Proenza Schouler white mini dress with gold buttons down the middle, matched with glittery Chanel shoes and a mini purse.
The Big Day
On April 22, Elliot Grainge and Sofia Richie officially tied the knot! The glamourous event took place in the very exclusive Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes, France, where the couple rented out the hotel for their guests. We can only imagine getting that invite!
Starting the day with a bridal breakfast, the model shared a photo of a table set for ten on an outdoor patio decorated with balloons as they got ready for the big day. Richie was walked down the aisle by her father, Lionel, and according to the TikToks, the party went on into the evening!
The guests were welcomed with monogrammed sweatshirts, hats, water bottles, and the weekend's itinerary-and it all looked gorgeous! Her bridesmaids all dawned matching blue and white monogrammed silk robes while getting ready for the big day. And as for the guest list? Let's take a closer look.
Celebrities like Sofia's sister Nicole and her husband Joel Madden were in attendance, as well as Benji Madden and his wife, Cameron Diaz. A close friend of the family, Paris Hilton, and her husband, Carter Reum, were guests as well. Beauty influencer Marianna Hewitt made an appearance as well!
The Happy Couple
From all the social media covering the most exclusive event of the season, the newlyweds looked beyond happy the entire time! The new Mr. and Mrs. Grainge were spotted looking smitten throughout the whole weekend and, of course, rocking that newlywed glow!
But now that the wedding weekend has come to a close, and we patiently await some of Sofia's personal pictures, we can't help but wonder what comes next for the gorgeous couple! If their wedding was in Antibes, where on earth is their honeymoon going to be?!
