How Jay Z Got Beyonce The Greatest Gift Ever... Thanks To 'Game of Thrones'

Beyonce is a queen. That's it, that's the whole thought. She's perfect, personified, and thanks to all of the hard work she's done in her life she really has everything she could hope for. She's revered worldwide, happily married (after a rough stretch, I know), a mother of three beautiful children and has set her family up for generations to come.

So, with all of that it begs the age old question: What do you get for the woman who has everything? Beyonce has birthdays, and anniversaries, and Mother's Days and all sorts of occasions and holidays that warrant gifts. What do you guy someone like that? How could you possibly present someone like Beyonce with something they don't actually have already?

Well, as her husband, Jay Z is tasked with solving that riddle multiple times a year, and on one occasion at least he figured it out and got Bey the greatest gift ever.

Here's the story of how Beyonce and Jay Z made it to that point, and Jay pulled off the impossible.

Vanity Fair

Way back in November of 2001, Jay Z and Beyonce both appeared on the cover of Vanity Fair's Music Issue, and even though they were a few feet apart, Jay later told the magazine the couple "were just beginning to try to date each other" at the time.

After all of her success as the lead singer of Destiny's Child, it made too much sense for Beyonce to go solo and look for some individual success. She eventually did, of course, and her first solo outing was as a guest on Jay's single "03 Bonnie and Clyde" in 2002. Even though they maintained they were just friends, they played love interests in the video and even did an interview for MTV's TRL together, only fueling rumors that they were a couple.

Eventually, in late 2002, the couple went public. Kind of. While still denying a romance, they began to attend events together, including numerous basketball games and New York Fashion week.

After the success of "03 Bonnie and Clyde," Jay returned the favor to Beyonce when it was time to drop her first ever solo single, "Crazy In Love." Jay gave her a verse and they showed off their chemistry in the video that gave birth to Bey's iconic walk and the "uh oh" dance. Jay appears on another song on the album as well, and there are tons of references to their clearly budding romance. Bey later appears in Jay Z's "Dirt Off My Shoulder/Public Service Announcement" video as he announces "I got the hottest chick in the game wearing my chain."

The couple finally went public when they walked the red carpet together at the 2004 MTV VMAs in Miami. Yes, the outfits (and tan!) were very of the times, and they both probably get a kick out of the pictures whenever these pop back up, but this was a historical moment. While this was the public acknowledgement of the worst kept secret ever, they continued to remain mum in interviews about the relationship.

Eventually, after getting engaged in 2007, the couple married in a private wedding at Jay's massive Tribeca apartment in 2008. The wedding was relatively small, with only 40 guests and no wedding party, just the bride and groom alone at the alter. But don't mistake small for cheap, because no expense was spared on the ceremony, and Beyonce even had 70,000 white dendrobium orchids, her favorite flower, flown in from Thailand.

From there, you know the rest of the story. Bey and Jay are the universe's power couple, and now have three beautiful kids and somehow manage to even work through the Becky With The Good Hair debacle. But even though they're royalty to us, they're still just normal people, believe it or not.

Yup, you read that right, Bey loves Thrones just like everybody else. In fact, back in 2016 when she won the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s ‘Fashion Icon Award’ she said the dresses she wore while she was in Destiny's Child made her feel "like Khaleesi." That, of course, is a reference to the show and one of it's most beloved characters, Daenerys Targaryen, played by Emilia Clarke.

While it's a tiny surprise to learn somebody is a fan of Game of Thrones, it's not a surprise at all to learn that Emilia Clark is a huge fan of Beyonce. Emilia is a vocal supporter of Bey both on her social media, in interviews and of course in real life.

In 2018 Emilia attended Beyoncé and Jay-Z's Manchester, England concert with her Solo: A Star Wars Story costar, Phoebe Waller-Bridge and they chronicled the evening on Instagtam. Between just enjoying the show, Emilia and Phoebe somehow managed to steal a life-sized Beyonce cutout and even took the thing to the bathroom with them. In one post, she snapped a pic with the cutout and said, "Bare witness to the end of the best night of my life."

Yes, Bey and Emilia eventually met, and though the meeting was awkward at first thanks to Emilia being nervous and fan girling so more, Beyonce eventually told her she was a big fan of hers. Imagine Beyonce not only knows you exist, and who you are, but she's also a fan?

"I see this vision, this angel, this incredible woman float towards me," Clarke told The New Yorker about the encounter. "I can't quite control myself. And Beyoncé says to me, 'Oh, my goodness, it's so wonderful to meet you. I think you're brilliant.' I just couldn't handle it! I was on the verge of tears."

For those who don't know, on Game of Thrones, Emilia plays Daenerys Targaryen, the Mother of Dragons, and the Khaleesi, a word for "Queen" of numerous civilizations. She is a feminist icon and the personification of power. Of course Beyonce Stans, we all Stan our Khaleesi. But beyond that, Emilia herself is an amazing and talented actress, who can't appreciate that, right?

h2

HBO

Yes, if you're not familiar with the show, the character Daenerys is a mythical figure, a woman who walked into a fire with three dragon eggs and came out with three dragons. That scene was the huge surprise at the end of the show's first season, and the launching point for many that turned this epic into a cultural phenomenon.

So, going back to our original question: what do you get a queen who already has everything? Jay Z had the answer and it's perfect, apparently you make her a Khaleesi.

h2

HBO

Yup, Jay dug deep and decided Bey deserved one of those eggs for herself, so apparently he went and got her one, somehow some way. It was Emilia herself who spilled the beans, telling Harpers BAZAAR the story back in 2015.

h2

HBO

According to Clarke, she found out that Jay Z purchased one of the eggs after he failed attempt to acquire one. "Apparently Jay Z bought one for Beyoncé, or something," she told the magazine after revealing that she tried to "blag," or steal, one for herself.

h2

HBO

If you take a quick search on eBay, you'll find some replica Game of Thrones dragon eggs for around a hundred bucks, and some even pricier replicas than that if you want higher quality. But the real eggs are practically priceless, and according to Emilia the actual eggs are "really, really, really expensive and they are really f-- heavy and serious works of art." She compared them to the historic Fabergé eggs, they're that fancy.

Multiple publications reached out to reps for everybody involved, including HBO, Jay Z, Beyonce and everybody in between. Nobody could confirm the story, but since Jay and Bey are notoriously tight-lipped about their relationship anyway, that doesn't necessarily mean the story isn't true it just means they don't want to talk about it.

h2

Instagram/Beyonce

Remember, Beyonce once made a documentary exclusively for HBO, and used the network as the official home for her video album Lemonade, back in 2016, so clearly there is a relationship there. It would be easy enough for Jay to reach out, pull some strings and drop a few bucks to purchase the eggs for Queen Bey.

h2

HBO

Remember, the huge cliffhanger with the eggs actually hatching happened at the end season one of Game of Thrones, which aired way back in 2011 but was filmed in 2010, so it wasn't like the eggs were being put to use. With Bey being such a big fan of the show and the character, it makes a perfect gift for whatever occasion Jay chose to give her the egg.

h2

Look, this is the best reason to believe this story: it's Beyonce. What Beyonce wants, she gets. Now, her wedding was one thing, of course Jay and everybody else involved went all out for her special day, even if that meant flying flowers in from Thailand. But her tour riders are the stuff of legend, and because it's Bey you know she got everything on the list at each and every tour stop.

A 2013 report said her rider for her Mrs. Carter Show world tour featured these demands: All crew members have to wear 100% cotton, alkaline water must be chilled to 21 degrees and served with $900 titanium straws, bathrooms must have new toilet seats and red toilet paper at every venue, hand-carved ice balls should be made after each show to cool her throat and more. This is the woman who cleared an entire floor of a hospital to give birth, so a dragon egg is probably easy.

Even with Beyonce a professed fan of Clarke and the character she plays, Emilia is still worried about keeping her happy. In an interview for The New Yorker she discussed a conversation she had with Beyonce at Jay Z's Oscars party this past February, and she touched on how she hoped Bey would still love her even after this season's massive plot twist. "I wanted to scream was 'Please, please still like me even though my character turns into a mass-killing dictator!" she told the magazine. "Please still think that I'm representing women in a really fabulous way.'"

h2

Instagram/emilia_clarke

Yup, Emilia went so far as to call Beyonce her idol while she spoke about how worried she was about Bey's reception of the show's final season. "I was just, like, Oh, my God, my absolute idol in life is saying that she likes me, and I know for a fact that by the end of this season she's going to hate me."

h2

Beyonce is fairly active on Instagram, especially for someone who is as busy as she surely is, but still hasn't reacted to the finale to Game of Thrones publicly. Maybe she reached out to Emilia privately, or maybe she's like the rest of us and still shocked about the series finale and all the shocking twists in the final season.

Yeah, when you're worth a combined billion dollars, you can give each other just about anything, and Beyonce and Jay Z have done that and some over the years. The elaborate gifts they've given each other include Bey gifting Jay with a $5 million watch with 1,282 diamonds for his 43rd birthday, or the private island -- yes, an entire island -- Jay reportedly gave Bey for her 29th birthday.
