TikToker and celebrity seat filler, Diego Pineda, has revealed some inside secrets on what really goes down behind the scenes of some of the biggest award shows. Lucky for us, he took to TikTok to give us the scoop on this top-secret information.
"It's not a job, it's more like volunteering because you don't get paid," Pineda revealed right off the bat. The 23-year-old worked as a seat filler at the 2019 People's Choice Awards and called it a "Once-in-a-lifetime experience." During the show, his role was to take celebrities' seats anytime they got up to accept or present an award.
Being high profile and exclusive events, the coordinators have to be sure that no seats are found empty on camera, so that's why Diego and the other fillers play an essential part. Aside from looking picture perfect on-screen, he was given a strict list of guidelines to follow.
First of all, he explained that he was never allowed to talk to any celebrities. Even if he was sitting right next to a person, he was forbidden from speaking to any "real" guests. Unless, however, the individual initiated the conversation, then he was allowed to engage.
He also discovered that award winners weren't surprised when they got called to the stage; They knew about their victories in advance. Pineda said that he witnessed come celebrities arrive right in time for their award, then leave the venue for a press appearance.
Pineda revealed that he got this role by applying through the website 1iota, so theoretically, anyone can get the chance to be a seat filler. Diego certainly learned a lot of information that most people would never know, and said that overall, "It was quite an experience!"
