Some of us could only dream about what we would do if we found a bag filled with cash. However, those fantasies usually don't involve giving it back. Well, a very honest José Nuñez Romaniz did the unthinkable when he found a package with $135,000 cash inside.
José saw the clear bag filled with money resting on the wall of the Wells Fargo bank ATM. Speaking about the moment, he said: "I didn't know what to do. I was, like, dreaming. I was just in shock. I was looking at myself and just thinking, 'What should I do?'".
He continued, "In the back of my head, I was just thinking about my parents, especially my mom. What she would do if I came home with the money and what she would do with her chancla (sandal) to hit me."
However, José did what most people wouldn't and called the emergency number written on the wall of the Wells Fargo bank. It turns out, one of the subcontractors who was meant to fill the ATM had accidentally forgotten the bag of money.
The 19-year-old who also happens to be pursuing a degree in criminal justice was rewarded for his honesty by the Albuquerque Police Department. José went home with $500 cash and season tickets to go see the University of New Mexico Lobos play football.
Chief Mike Geier from the Police Department commended José for setting such a fine example: "What a great opportunity for us to see some good in the community with all the tragedies we see with young people, this really restores our faith in the community as well."
