I knew for a fact that shrimp could swim backwards, I'd witnessed it many times myself. So I emailed Snapple through the address on their web site and asked them where they got the copy for the factoids. They pointed me to a college student's web page, and among the pages with recycled blonde jokes and urban legends was the list of "little-known facts" that the package designers mined for copy. They must have thought that since the page was hosted on a college's server, it was somehow factual. I wrote them back and asked them if anyone thought to double-check the information.
